What is one piece of advice you would give to your first year self?

I would tell my first year self that there is no right way to feel. We're always told how we should feel or how we should act in certain situations, which can make it confusing when, for example, we feel negatively when we think we should feel positively. University is going to be filled with different emotions, good and bad, but it is important to remind ourselves that none of those emotions are wrong. Welcome those emotions, try to understand them, and it might make the transition to university a little less overwhelming.

When you receive your syllabus write down your professor’s office hours. Taking the time to reach out and ask questions will ensure that you have a strong grasp of the course content. Doing so will make your experience with the course much more enjoyable.

Give yourself time to breathe! It's okay to not want to be surrounded by people 24/7. Putting so much pressure on yourself to have the quintessential first year experience can be exhausting! Take a step back, try new things and see what feels true to you. Follow your heart, and I promise you'll like what you find.

My favourite memory from first year definitely has to be the nights all of my friends would come over to my room. We'd order bubble tea and food and just listen to music for hours. I even made a playlist specifically for these late nights, and love the memories it brings when I go back to it! These laid back nights with the people that quickly became my family helped me stay grounded during all of the excitement of first year! https://open.spotify.com/user/benl2000/playlist/6JtIe6c1iUxIQoHcQt2Svy?si=zoc7zQ0ySn6smvwSHT-vLw :)

Another event that I loved was the headphone disco. This was an opportunity to meet friends outside of health sci which was cool.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your first year self?

Advice: My greatest piece of advice to first years would be to get out of your head! In the beginning of welcome week, I found it to be incredibly intimidating to get involved in new activities with a new peer group, especially when I didn’t know a single person at McMaster. I learned over the course of welcome week to take to heart the saying ‘challenge by choice’. My advice would be to choose to challenge yourself when you are ready because its these adventures where you meet your best friends and make the most unforgettable memories. So get out of your head and get out there; you won’t regret it!

What is one piece of advice you would give to your first year self?

I would give my first year self the advice to take a chance and go out of your comfort zone. University flies by, but it's the perfect opportunity to push yourself to try new things. There are so many clubs, cool opportunities, and things that you can try that you've never tried before. I would encourage myself to just take that chance, because you never know who you'll meet, what you'll learn, and who knows, you may just find a new passion!

It’s important to pause and take a day for yourself when you need to—don’t spread yourself thin. That being said, self-care isn’t about staying in bed watching Netflix while eating pizza until 5am. Sometimes self-care is about going out for that run, cleaning your room, or getting an earlier start on some work. Sleep earlier and take care of your body!!

Remember to take breaks! In first year I was really stressed about how I was going to handle the university workload, and as a result I felt as though I didn't give myself enough time to relax and recover from working really hard. Take a short break, grab breakfast, lunch or dinner with some friends, and manage your time well, so that first year is more manageable (and enjoyable :))!

My favourite first year memories are when I used to come home to my friends in my apartment (they didn’t actually live there) and somehow it would always end up being 4am and we had done nothing that night, just laughing, talking, eating (shoutout to Mini Mac), and dancing. Those were my favourite nights, because thats how I knew they would be my people.

Know that you’re not alone! Between midterms, projects, classes, friends, food and of course the top of the “University Student’s Hierarchy of Needs”: SLEEP, I can tell you, it can get overwhelming at times! In first year I was under the impression that everyone had their life figured out, and that it was me who was the only one struggling to balance everything. As far-fetched as it may seem, everyone is actually in the same boat. All it takes to realize that is to reach out to your friends and upper-years!

What is one piece of advice you would give to your first year self?

If I were to give advice to my first year self, I would say don’t be afraid to be yourself. Embrace who you are - the quirks, the talents, the introverted and extroverted sides of you, the good days and the bad - because there WILL be people that you come across and will love you for being you. The struggles and hurts you've experienced in the past may have made you question whether there was something wrong with you and caused you to build on these layers to show people the person you thought they expected you to be. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with you - you were just waiting for the right time, circumstance, and people to bring out the confident and bright version of you. Surround yourself with these people constantly, and they will remind you how worthy you are of their love.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your first year self?

Dear first year me… I know university can be a bit daunting, and sometimes the idea of coming into Health Sciences can be a bit scary. There might be times when you’re unsure of yourself and it seems like everyone else has it all figured out. But it’s important to pave your own path because what makes others smile might not make you smile. It’s important to remember to be kind to others, but its also so so important to be kind to yourself. It’s important to be proud of who you are and what you will become. I know sometimes you might feel like an imposter in this program, but please know that you’re here for a reason. This community is so happy that you’re here and can’t wait to welcome you home and into the wolfpack.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your first year self?

I would encourage myself to reach out for help (from upper years, profs and student services). As an upper year (now), I can genuinely say that we would really like to help you! I know it can be intimidating, but definitely don’t doubt that we’re all here for you (that includes these upper years, your teachers and this school)! I think asking for help can be a sign of confidence and maturity - it often means you’re secure enough in yourself that you can admit you need help.

Dancing in the health sci fashion show! For anyone who doesn't know about it yet, it is a charity fashion show where models dance and wear clothes that are on sale (you will learn more about it at the clubs fair in the beginning of the year!). It was amazing because I was surrounded by my friends, whether they were dancing with me or supporting us from the audience. I know that sounds a bit cheesy, but I really do think it is important to find people that you feel comfortable around and who build you up. I am kind of shy, so I was worried about making friends, but I ended up meeting some amazing people!

I barely knew anyone in our program and felt so lost; we were a cohort of about 250 students coming from anywhere and everywhere, where the sole thing uniting us was our program. Regardless, when the music came on, all walls were broken and suddenly it felt like I was with my people. We were booling, bopping, dancing, wilding out, and just having more fun than I imagined I ever would. That night I found my family, I found my wolf pack, I found home.

Don’t be afraid to open up to those around you, and the sooner you do so, the better! Coming from Ottawa, I didn’t know many people at McMaster and felt like I had lost the support system of family, friends, and teachers that I had back home. It took me a while, but I forced myself to have more of an open and positive mindset, and eventually I made some really good friends who I am able to rely on and who are able to rely on me. Also, don’t be afraid to open up to teachers. Every professor you’ll meet has had so much amazing experience, and each one would love to have a conversation with you. If you are brave and approach them for help or advice, you can only benefit!

But be sure to recognize that YOU are incredible as well. Recognize all of your accomplishments and how far YOU have grown as a person.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your first year self?

Don't worry so much about how well you'll fit in or how many friends you will make. No one comes into university with everything already figured out. Everyone is in the same boat. Everyone wants to make friends and share amazing memories together. Its up to you to take the first leap into what could be the greatest 4 years of your life.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your first year self?

Don’t try to be someone that you’re not! This program is an incredible place because there IS diversity here. It may seem like everyone wants to go down the same career path, but once you ask around, you’ll notice that there are so many other options. You will feel pressure to conform to the majority at times, even if that pressure is self-induced, but be proud of your individual goals. Be proud to take the path less traveled by. It’s also okay if your plans change throughout your years here (because they probably will), so definitely think critically about your aspirations. Take others’ advice into account, but stay true to yourself throughout. P.S. take advantage of your profs! Health Sci enables you to pretty easily form relationships with profs and facilitators, which provides you with an incredible opportunity to learn more from them than just course material.

Favourite first year memory:

My most memorable experiences always came from my common room in residence. Going there and being able to meet and develop relationships with people on my floor was one of my favourite things from first year. We would have movie nights, watch cheesy Netflix shows (any Selling Sunset fans??), and talk endlessly about the wildest things. Everyone knew if you wanted any company, all you had to do was go to the common room and someone was bound to show up. These common room bonding times allowed me to meet incredible people who became my closest friends!

One memory I can immediately think of from first year was the year end block party! It was super fun to chill with my friends, especially cause the year was coming to an end. I remember all of the lights on campus were really pretty and the carnival itself reminded me of summer. It was overall a great night where I could spend time with some of my closest friends :)

What is one piece of advice you would give to your first year self?

Try to find a balance between stepping out of your comfort zone and staying true to yourself. It’s definitely a great thing to try and meet as many new people as possible, but don’t feel obligated to associate with someone with whom you can’t be a comfortable version of yourself. It’s easy to fall into the trap of spreading yourself too thin with new friends, clubs, and courses. Don’t find yourself burnt out from having a bunch of identities that don’t coincide with who you want to be.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your first year self?

You don’t need to use other people around you as a measure for success; define what "success" means to you based on what you want to do - not what you can do or what others are doing. Rather, relying on your passion for things will help you find a sense of purpose - especially in a program full of such motivated, intelligent individuals. Do things that excite you and focus on yourself (seriously, Marie Kondo has the right idea). If it doesn't spark joy, get rid of it! It took me months to realize this and I wish I had earlier; taking part in activities and hobbies that enrich your life alongside your academics will go a long way for your happiness, sense of self-worth, and sanity.

What is one piece of advice you would give to your first year self?

It’s okay if you do not feel like you have everything perfectly together, especially in first year. I remember spending a lot of time in first year worrying that I was not accomplishing enough, and in hindsight I think that mentality took away from my enjoyment of the year. University is a big transition, and it’s okay if it takes a while to get the hang of things; there are four years to do that. While it is important to try your best, don’t let that get in the way of your enjoyment of university!
